At Light Wings Promotions, Organic Traffic Generation is one of our core services. As pro’s in SEO we know all about how to increase your SERP. But maybe you are not a pro. You’ve just started your blog or created a website and have heard all about Search Engine Optimization.  You know google searches for keywords and that is how it ranks it on its searches. And you know that deciding on the keywords for your content and working around those words will increase the SEO of your content. This is where Keyword Planner, the Google keyword tool, can come in handy. It’s simple to use, and best of all, free. What is an efficient way to get people to people on your website? Make sure you are making use of keywords!

Keywords are a pillar of organic traffic generation and SEO. Keywords are the words and phrases that people are putting into google already. Get it? So we want to use the words that people are already searching for to optimize our blog post or webpage.

We want to understand how our target audience is currently searching for things. The language they use, the specific products or services they are looking for, or even the questions they are asking. This is all keyword research!

The Benefits

So the obvious and most intended consequences for doing keyword research is to get people to your site. But there are other benefits as well.

  • You can find out similar keywords that are less competitive. Less competition means you can rank higher on google. Using the google keyword tool can help.
  • Discover what kind of content you need to make. You’re a bakery, having a blog on baking? You can do keyword research and directly pick your blog topics based on what people are searching for.
  • Understand your market. Every time you conduct keyword research, you will gain insights on your potential customers. They will surprise you on the way they search for things and the words they use. They are not pros like you are and understanding the mindset of your average joe is essential.

"By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”–Benjamin Franklin

Next step up is to do some planning and brainstorming. An essential in any endeavor, one often skipped, planning before you conduct research can make the difference. Open a text document and write what you want to rank for. You probably already have a few phrases in mind; your services, or the product you’re selling. These are the easy ones. But write them all down, and words that are like that.

But dig a little deeper and you can find some gold. Look at the content your competitors are making. Are there any subjects that surprise you? Jot it down. Are there any services or products you plan to feature in the future? Also jot it down. Getting a good foundation will make the rest of the process easier. Plan ahead so when you open up the google keyword tool, you are already set up for success.

There are different keyword research tools, some even better than the one provided by google. Today we will be using the google keyword tool, Keyword Planner. As a newbie to the SEO game, I recommend using The google keyword planner because it is free and getting familiar with google and the applications it has for businesses can help you down the line as you set up a google ads account or google analytics.

Here is a video tutorial on how to set up an account.

After you have it all set up, click on the keyword idea’s section type in one word you have and search it.

So…. What are we looking for?

Pick a word and search it. What we are looking for is simple. We want to find the words that is

  1. Most Relevant
  2. Has the highest search volume
  3. Has the lowest competition

Now you can use what is searched but still have low competition. There may be higher searches on other keywords, but the competition to rank on those words is just way too high. Unless you are an established name with a ton of content, it will not be worth your time. Look for what is still being searched for, but has low competition. You use these words by optimizing your blog posts or webpages based on these words. Doing this bit of research, finding out what exactly is being searched for, and creating your content around it, is a sure-fire way to improve any company’s SEO.

At Light Wing Promotion’s, this is just one of the many things we do with our Organic Traffic Generation Services. Doing things right from the beginning will help dividends down the road. Think of it as an investment in the future. As Kevin Costner once said in that movie, “If you build it, they will come”. Well, it’s true.
